The Solution

WebQuest designed, developed and continues to operate a modern digital publishing platform for Magyar Hírlap, replacing the constraints of a legacy system with a scalable, maintainable and production-ready architecture.

The engagement went far beyond a visual redesign. We rebuilt the platform across the public news experience, backend services, editorial workflows and production operations, creating a unified technical foundation for continuous publishing, future development and long-term service continuity.

The platform is built around a separated Next.js frontend and modular NestJS backend, with clearly defined application boundaries and controlled API communication.

Purpose-Built Editorial Platform

Instead of relying on a generic off-the-shelf CMS, the platform includes a custom editorial environment designed specifically for newsroom operations.

Editors can manage the complete content lifecycle from draft and review through scheduled publication, live delivery and archival. The system supports multiple publishing formats, structured taxonomy, media management, homepage composition and controlled publishing workflows.

Editorial integrity is reinforced through revisions, content locking, roles, permissions, sessions, audit events and activity logging.

This gives the editorial team a workflow tailored to the way the publication actually operates, rather than forcing the organization to adapt its processes to a generic CMS.

Legacy Migration & Content Continuity

Modernizing a long-running publishing platform requires more than moving data from one database to another.

WebQuest implemented dedicated migration structures and tooling to transition existing content into the new platform while maintaining traceability between legacy and new records.

The migration strategy was designed around four priorities:

  • maintaining URL continuity

  • protecting editorial usability

Legacy content, assets and URL structures were handled as part of a controlled transition rather than a one-time bulk import.

SEO & Public Delivery

For a national news platform, publishing speed and discoverability are both fundamental.

The public application combines server-rendered delivery, revalidation and shared caching to support a high-read workload while allowing editorial changes to reach readers quickly.

The production platform is supported by a resilient operational architecture designed around service isolation, controlled ingress, caching, search, database resilience, monitoring and recoverability.

Application services are containerized and supported by centralized observability, encrypted off-site backups and documented recovery procedures. Deployment follows controlled, automated container release flows to support consistent environment-specific releases.
